From the artists: "Northern Right Whales are among the rarest and most endangered of all the Great Whales. They were once the mainstay of the 18th & 19th Century New England whaling industry. They were the 'right' whale to hunt because they stayed close to shore. They were slow swimming and easy to catch and kill. They floated when killed and they yielded large amounts of whale blubber rendered into whale oil and baleen or "whale bone". So the cry from the crows nest was: 'Thar she blows!  It's the Right Whale!.' After two centuries of whaling, populations were severely depleted and although they have been protected for over 80 years, there are still fewer than 350 Northern Right Whales in the North Atlantic. Right Whales are filter feeders, swimming through the surface water with their mouths open, using their fine mesh baleen to capture and strain zooplankton called Copepods. Copepods are tiny crustaceans, too small to be captured by other Mysticetes or Baleen Whales with coarser baleen. So, one of the largest animals in the world feeds on one of the smallest."
